The Baltimore Ravens have been basking in the glow of advancing to just the second Super Bowl in franchise history, but have been doing so from the comfort of home. Today the actuality of the Super Bowl will finally hit Baltimore's players and coaches as they will be heading to New Orleans today after their sendoff rally in Baltimore this morning.
Although this Ravens team is very experienced in the playoffs, only four players on the active 54 man roster has played in a Super Bowl prior to this season: Ray Lewis, Anquan Boldin, Brendon Ayanbadejo, and James Ihedigbo. Lewis, of course, was part of the Baltimore team that trounced the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXXV. Boldin played in a Super Bowl with the Arizona Cardinals, Ayanbadejo with the Chicago Bears, and Ihedigbo with the New England Patriots. These four players have been talking and counseling other players all week on what the atmosphere, environment, the media, and the overall experience is like and how to cope with it, but the other 50 Ravens will be surprised no matter how much the four who have experienced have told them.
Despite only having four players who have been to a Super Bowl, Baltimore still outnumbers San Francisco in that statistic as the 49'ers only have three players with Super Bowl experience in David Akers, Randy Moss and Clark Haggans.
The Ravens are set to arrive in New Orleans today around 4:00pm local time CST, and head coach John Harbaugh as well as some players, Joe Flacco, Terrell Suggs, Matt Birk, Ray Rice and Lewis will speak with the media once they arrive. Tomorrow the entire Ravens team will experience the craziness that is Media Day as they will be available 12:15-1:15pm to respond to questions from hundreds of members from the media in front of thousands of fans, and will be asked questions they never thought they would ever be asked.
We are now just six days away from the big game and be sure to check back later today as we will have the first of three parts of our 49'ers Insider Report series as we get the inside scoop on San Francisco from our friends over at 49ers101.
