Pretty much every season since Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has come into the league, his performance has been highly scrutinized and more specifically over the last two seasons where his rookie contract was coming to an end. The question always came up of whether or not he is worth top five quarterback money, the time has come to say, enough with those questions.
First let's start with the basic proof of Flacco's worth, and that of course is wins and playoffs appearances. As a starting quarterback, Flacco has a career record of 54-26 in the regular season, which to you math astute readers comes to a phenomenal just over twice as many wins as losses, that's remarkable, especially considering he has only been in the league for five seasons. Next, he has been and won a playoff game in each of his first five seasons in the NFL, the only quarterback to be able to say that; not to mention he umm, yeah won the Super Bowl this year. His career playoff record is 9-4, and his nine wins in the playoffs match that of the great Peyton Manning.
So now that the obvious is out of the way, let's examine some not so obvious reasons and or statistics that prove Flacco's worth. First, and this can't be stressed enough, Flacco has started EVERY game since he was drafted by the Ravens and is as durable as it gets for a quarterback in the NFL. Knowing your starting quarterback is going to be there day in and day out is huge for any franchise, nonetheless a perennial playoff contender. Also, in each of the last four seasons, Flacco has thrown for 20 or more touchdowns, 3,600 or more yards and has never thrown more than 12 interceptions in a single season, that's pretty darn efficient.
Bottom line, Joe Flacco is a winner and has proven so time and time again, and yes I will admit that Flacco is not a fantasy football quarterback juggernaut, but the NFL is not decided by fantasy stats, it is decided by wins and losses and no one has done it better than Joe Flacco in the last five years. Since Flacco has come into the league, only five quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl (Brees, E. Manning, Roethlisberger, Rodgers) and Flacco is one of them. You may say, well why doesn't Joe throw for 5,000 yards like those other guys, and the answer is two fold, one he has Ray Rice, none of the four aforementioned Super Bowl winners have realistically had a top caliber running back to hand the ball off to, and secondly the Ravens play in the AFC North which is widely known as a defensive division, so when you play six games a year against high caliber defenses, your numbers are going to suffer.
