Baltimore Ravens Top Free Agent Priority Other than Joe Flacco

The Baltimore Ravens have a huge list of free agents and decisions to make this offseason that goes beyond just resigning quarterback Joe Flacco. Who should be the top free agent priority outside of Flacco has been a big question around Charm City and the answer, at least in my opinion is LB Dannell Ellerbe.

Some fans may be saying, "Josh, how can you say Ed Reed is not the top priority outside of Flacco?" and I completely understand that question, but you must look at the needs of the Ravens, and not just the caliber of player. Reed is still a good player, but the safety position is easier to replace than inside linebacker, especially when you already have Ray Lewis retiring, thus already have to replace one, so keeping Ellerbe is huge.

Again, a team's needs is far superior than the caliber of a free agent, more specifically as it retains to Reed, and Ellerbe will need to be retained by the Ravens as inside linebacker presents a huge hole for Baltimore next season. Ellerbe had a good season this year, and really held the defense together when Lewis was out with his triceps injury. Dannell who did miss a little time due to injury was still second on the team with 92 tackles, third with 4.5 sacks and also had a fumble recovery.

Not only is he a statistically good inside linebacker, but his ability in pass coverage is also a huge plus and when you look at what Baltimore has coming back at the inside linebacker position, in an injury prone Jameel McClain, Albert McClellan and Josh Bynes, so obviously keeping Ellerbe is vastly important to this Baltimore defense.
